Swelling


Every surgical procedure is accompanied by postoperative swelling. The iced washcloths will minimize the swelling but will not prevent it entirely. Do not be surprised if the swelling actually increases during the first three days after the operation despite your most conscientious attention to these directions. The swelling is a natural reaction to surgery.

Seventy percent of the swelling will be gone by the end of the first week, and eighty percent by the end of the second week. The remainder will resolve gradually, giving a continued improvement in your appearance.

As the swelling resolves, it will migrate down away from your eyes and may appear in your upper cheeks before it disappears entirely. You can minimize the swelling and speed its resolution by sleeping with the head of your bed elevated. Place a couple of pillows or a folded blanket under the mattress at the head of your bed.

You may notice that the swelling is more visible when you get up in the morning. Stay up most of the day, either in a chair or in bed with your head well elevated. Of course, rest when you are tired.

Call the office promptly if one eyelid swells markedly over a very short time, or if you experience deep pain in an eye or blurring or loss of vision in an eye.
