The hump can be removed
with a hammer and chisel. The edge of the chisel that does the cutting is
on the left in this photograph. The bulge in the middle of the chisel is a
handle which allows the surgeon to
hold it more securely. The hammer is made out of soft copper. For

Here's another example
of the cartilage and bony hump, removed in one piece. The bony portion is
colored green in the diagram.
On the underside, we
see the bone in green, and the cut edge of the septum in pink. This septum
didn't sit exactly in the middle of this person's nose. See how it curves
off to the side as it approaches the bone?
