Will being overweight affect the outcome of my face lift?

An overweight individual with a short fat neck and a round face will obtain less visible benefit from a face lift than a person with a thin slender neck and lots of draping excess skin. The heavier individual can still benefit from the sharpening of the features that the face lift provides, but the results are likely to be less dramatic.

Does that mean I should lose weight before surgery?

Yes and no. If you plan to be aggressive and lose twenty-five pounds or more, dieting before surgery would benefit your general appearance and your general health as well as making the results of your face lift more noticeable. However, be realistic before postponing surgery for a diet; very few people are actually able to lose that much weight. If you know that you will be keeping your current weight, it is okay to just go ahead with the surgery.  If Dr. Denenberg feels that your weight and/or facial shape are such that you would receive only a very small improvement from the face lift, he may advise against surgery for you.

On the other hand, it is not advisable to shed five or ten pounds quickly right before the procedure. Your tissues need to heal after the operation, and they should not be nutritionally starved just before surgery.  Also, the loss of five or ten pounds will not markedly affect your facial features. If you are concerned, Dr. Denenberg can discuss your weight with you and whether or not it will affect your operation.

I smoke.  Is that a problem?

Smoking can be a small problem.  Smoking decreases the supply of blood that nourishes your facial skin, and that blood supply is crucial to proper healing.  Your skin can be harmed if it doesn't receive all the blood it needs during the first week after surgery.

Dr. Denenberg will typically modify the techniques that he uses during surgery, in order to put less strain on your facial blood supply.  It is possible that those modifications will decrease the amount of improvement you can achieve from the operation.  Dr. Denenberg will discuss this matter with you during your consultation.

How much improvement can I expect to get?

The visible improvement that you obtain from the face lift will depend on how much excess skin is present, your facial bony structure, the thickness and texture of your skin, and how you heal. Very important: during surgery, Dr. Denenberg will do all he can to maximize the benefit you achieve from the operation, but not everyone will get the same amount of improvement from the same full-effort operation.

Do you shave any of my hair?

Never.
