Are my two eyes the same?

Study your eyes in the mirror and see if your two eyes are slightly different in appearance. During development, the face is formed from two completely separate halves which join in the middle. Sometimes the joining is not perfectly symmetrical, and many people have one eye that is lower than the other, or eyes that appear to be different sizes.

Asymmetries that occur during development cannot be corrected with surgery, and it is better to notice the asymmetries beforehand than to find them during your postoperative scrutiny and to wonder if they were caused by the operation.

Can eyelid surgery be done at the same time as other
operations?

Yes. It is common for eyelid surgery to be performed at the same time as a face lift or rhinoplasty.

She had a face lift operation, and a skin peel later to work on the wrinkles. She also had excess skin removed from her upper eyelids.

Will there be scars from my eyelid surgery?

The upper eyelid scar hides in the fold above the upper eyelashes, and it comes out to the side a short distance into the crow's feet.  The scar will be all but invisible. The incision for the lower eyelid surgery is hidden on the inside of the lower lid, so there is no visible scar at all.

The scars will be pink and firm at first, especially by the crow's feet where the skin is thicker. The scars will soften, flatten out, and pale to a hair-thin white line. You may expect rapid improvement over the first three weeks, but complete maturation of the scars may take six months to a year.  Scars may be hidden with makeup starting about ten days after surgery.

Will the eyelid surgery stop my eyes from aging?

No.  But the signs of aging typically take many years to return after a blepharoplasty.

When can I return to work?

Count on staying home for a minimum of one or two days after surgery.  This will allow you to restrict your activities to a minimum. Too much activity too early after surgery can raise your blood pressure and cause bleeding and more bruising and swelling. You may return to work after two or three days if your activities involve no lifting or strenuous activity.  You may want to hide behind sunglasses and makeup, or you may want to wait until your eyes look more normal before you return to work, perhaps one week after surgery.
