What else makes my eyes look older?

The position of your eyebrows and your "crow's feet" also affect the apparent age of your eyes.

As gravity pulls on the facial skin over the years, the eyebrows drop in position. Lowering of the eyebrows exacerbates the problem of excess skin on the upper eyelid. The combination of these normal changes can make the eyelids look and feel heavy and make one look tired or even grumpy.

How do you help drooping eyebrows?

If low eyebrows are a problem, a brow lift can raise them. In this procedure, incisions are hidden in the hair, and working through those incisions, the eyebrows are raised.

This patient had a brow lift instead of upper eyelid surgery.

In a man, if very low eyebrows are a problem, usually a different procedure called a direct brow lift is recommended. An incision up in the hairline may not hide well in a man with thinning hair. In a direct brow lift, the skin immediately above the eyebrow is excised and the brows are raised as the closing stitches are placed. The patient must have relatively thick eyebrows to help hide the thin scar that results.

If the eyebrows are very droopy, they sometimes must be raised before the excess skin can be removed from the upper eyelids. In some cases, we recommend that the eyebrows be raised first, and then the upper eyelids are operated on several weeks later.

This patient had an eyebrow lift, followed six weeks later by an upper eyelid blepharoplasty. The extent of her hereditary skin excess and low brow position required that both procedures be used to give her a maximal improvement.
