Upper Eyelid Surgery

This chapter discusses the cosmetic upper eyelid operation.  In doctorspeak we call this operation an upper eyelid "blepharoplasty," pronounced BLEPH-uh-row-plass-tee.  The purpose of the operation is to remove excess skin, and some fat, from the upper eyelids, to make them appear more youthful.

Look at these young eyes.  The red line in the diagram shows the position of her upper eyelid's eyelashes, right at the edge of the lid.  The light blue line is drawn at the level of the crease that the eyelid skin makes when the eyes are open.  That crease is usually about one-third of an inch above the eyelashes.  Young eyes are characterized, in part, by our ability to see the part of the eyelid between the lashes and that crease -- the part of the eyelid on which you would put your eyeliner, or some eye shadow.

That part of the eyelid is called the "platform" of the upper eyelid.  I've colored her right platform pink in the diagram.

Look closely, and you'll see that this woman's right platform is also shaded pink, but you can't see much of it, because she has excess skin that hangs, like a hood, over the lateral part of her upper eyelid.  The dotted line in her left upper eyelid shows where we would like to see the crease above the platform.

A frequent goal of an upper eyelid blepharoplasty is to remove the hooding of excess skin and restore our ability to see the platform of the upper eyelid.
