Here's an interesting complication that I see
uncommonly. This patient has a bridge of scar tissue that stretches from the
area of the columella to the side wall of the inside of the nose. An
unwanted bridge of scar tissue like that is called a synechium, pronounced
sin-EE-kee-uhm. The scar tissue comprising the synechium is highlighted in
blue.

This is another scar
tissue synechium. This one is interesting because, as you can see below,
the scar band is so well-defined: I can put a hook around it to demonstrate it to you
clearly. Again, I have shaded the synechium in blue.
In these pictures, I'm revealing the synechium by putting a
little metal hook (red) around it. Sometimes a synechium is relatively easy to
excise, opening the nostril up again. The appearance after a successful
excision of this synechium is shown below.
You can see that I've
marked an inverted "V" across her columella. After removing the
synechium, I went on to open this nose to make some other changes, too.
