The jowl hangs down to obscure our view of a straight line along the lower jaw from the chin up to the ear.  The network of wrinkles that descend from the corner of the mouth down to the jaw line are really just the front border of the jowl; those wrinkles are improved when the jowl is pulled back during the face lift.
