When a plastic surgeon is evaluating a patient's upper eyelid area, it's crucial that he determine whether the eyebrows are in a normal position, so that he can decide whether elevating the brows or removing excess skin from the upper eyelids is the correct operation.

If you tried to remove excess skin from these upper lids, and left the brows where they are, she would look worse, not better, after surgery.

Questioner: Question regarding doctor qualifications?
I'm scheduling to hsve rhinoplasty in 1 month. Today i met my family doctor and when I told him that I chose a facial plastic surgeon he said that qualification is for ENT dr not a true plastic surgeon. And to really think about my choice. I was really happy that my surgeon only does noses 200/year until my dr questioned everything I told him about my rhino dr. i taught it was better to have a dr with 1 specialty instesd of the ine doing all the procedures on the body. should i worry a about it?

Dr. Denenberg's answer: Pardon, but I think you're on the wrong track...
To  respond to your family doctor's comments, the question about whether a doctor with ENT / facial plastic training has adequate qualifications was answered and put to bed over thirty years ago: the ENT / facial plastic surgeon is highly, highly qualified, and your doctor is waaaaay off base. Sorry.

A "general" plastic surgeon, who does not originally have ENT training, and who works on the whole body, can also be highly qualified, *if* he has adequate training on the face himself. Sounds like your family practice doctor has a friend who is a general plastic surgeon, and he wants to steer you to his friend.

But none of this matters for you. The great majority of doctors who do rhinoplasty, whether originally ENT trained or not, are mediocre at this operation, and the only way to tell the skill of your doctor is to review his before and after photos. Board certification means almost nothing at all. Ignore the diplomas and look at the photos. See whether he has been able to accomplish for others what you want for yourself. If you're doing research, you've probably seen lots of before and afters online, and you have a feel for what's possible and how you want your nose changed. See whether the doctor(s) you are considering have done that kind of work.
